“Months before we launched the site, I asked myself who would want to buy merchandise with the McKinney brand on it,” said Laura Smetak, a graphic artist with the Marketing and Communications Department. But people did. Realtors, businessmen and women, proud parents and sports nuts all seem to want to advertise the pride that they have in their hometown. After the release of the new “Unique by Nature” brand in February, in-towners and out-of-towners alike called Smetak in search of lapel pins, T-shirts and bumper stickers. One call was from an Alabama classroom that wanted McKinney gear to give as a going away present to cheer up a child from the class who was moving to McKinney. Smetak received another call from a group of friends who wanted to send off one of their buddies who was moving from the city with a reminder of the folks in McKinney.
