News Details (Posted: November 30, 2006):

TEMPERATURE DROP = INCREASE DRIVING PRECAUTIONS

Full Description:

Local officials are calling out to motorists to take extra precaution before approaching bridges and overpasses as the National Weather Service forecasts a drop in temperature below freezing for later this week. This drop in temperature could make for very dangerous driving conditions.

City of McKinney crews are on standby to assist motorists as the need arises.

The tips below are very helpful and could potentially save your life.

If you have to get out, start early and drive slow.
Keep a full tank of gas in your car and always keep a blanket.
Allow for greater following distance on any slippery road and be prepared to stop at any given time.
Watch for slippery spots behind buildings or under bridges. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), if you cannot get traction on the road, spread sand, cat litter or some kind of abrasive material around vehicle tires. Then, shift the car into low gear (or second gear in a manual transmission) and slowly apply pressure to the accelerator.
